Investing.com – U.K. stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Fixed Line Telecommunications , Oil & Gas Producers and Gas, Water & Multiutilities sectors led shares lower.

At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 declined 0.79%.

The best performers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Diageo PLC (LON: DGE ), which rose 4.25% or 102.00 points to trade at 2,503.50 at the close. Meanwhile, JD Sports Fashion PLC (LON: JD ) added 2.82% or 2.30 points to end at 84.00 and Mondi PLC (LON: MNDI ) was up 2.03% or 24.50 points to 1,229.00 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Marks and Spencer Group PLC (LON: MKS ), which fell 3.40% or 11.30 points to trade at 321.50 at the close. Shell PLC (LON: SHEL ) declined 2.35% or 63.00 points to end at 2,620.00 and Centrica PLC (LON: CNA ) was down 2.11% or 2.90 points to 134.70.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the London Stock Exchange by 898 to 883 and 643 ended unchanged.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.54% or 14.94 to $2,779.94 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.38% or 0.28 to hit $74.34 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at $78.28 a barrel.

GBP/USD was up 1.17% to 1.25, while EUR/GBP unchanged 0.18% to 0.84.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.76% at 107.04.
